A website refresh makes sense when your site's foundation still works, but the design, content, or features need updating. A full rebuild makes sense when you're switching platforms, your brand has changed significantly, or your site's structure is holding your business back.
Many of the business owners I talk with have been in business for a few years. They know what's working on their website and what isn't, and they can feel that their site no longer reflects where the business is today. The question is whether to improve what's there or start fresh.
Here's how I help clients decide.
What's the difference between a website refresh and a rebuild?
A website refresh improves your existing site on the same platform. Instead of starting over, I work with what's already there by updating pages, adding features, improving navigation, and making the site work better for visitors and search engines.
A full rebuild is a new website designed from the ground up. Your content may carry over, but the design, structure, and often the platform are all new.
Think of it like a home: a refresh is new paint, updated fixtures, and a better layout in a few rooms. A rebuild is new construction.
When is a website refresh the right choice?
A refresh is usually a good fit when:
- You like your platform and want to stay on Shopify or Squarespace
- Your site's overall structure still makes sense, but some pages feel outdated
- You've added new products or services and need pages to support them
- Your site works, but it could work better, such as clearer navigation, stronger calls to action, or faster-loading pages
- You want to improve SEO, AI search visibility, or accessibility without changing the design
- Your business is shifting focus and your site needs to reflect new priorities
A refresh can make a big difference without the time and cost of starting over.
When do you need a full website rebuild?
A rebuild is usually the better choice when:
- You're switching platforms, such as moving from Squarespace to Shopify, or from a DIY builder to one of them
- Your brand has changed significantly, with a new logo, colors, or direction your current design can't support
- Your site was built on an outdated theme or template that limits what you can do
- The structure no longer fits your business, and fixing it would mean redoing most pages anyway
- You're constantly working around your website instead of it working for you
- It doesn't look or work well on phones, and the issues run deeper than a few pages
If most of the list feels familiar, patching the current site may cost you more time and frustration than it saves.
What if you want to switch from Squarespace to Shopify, or the other way around?
Switching platforms means a rebuild. Each platform has its own themes, structure, and way of handling content, so a site can't simply be moved and refreshed.
The most common switch I see is a business that started on Squarespace and grew into selling more products, where Shopify becomes the better fit. If you're weighing that, I compare both platforms in "Shopify vs. Squarespace: Which Is Right for Your Small Business?"
What if your brand has changed too?
Businesses evolve, and brands should evolve with them. If you've grown past your original logo and look, updating your website without updating your brand can leave things feeling mismatched.
When a brand and website are designed together, everything feels like one continuous experience, and that cohesiveness is what builds trust. My Branding + Web Design Suite currently starts at $2,500 and typically takes six to eight weeks.
How much does a website refresh cost compared to a rebuild?
A Website Refresh is billed at $75 an hour, since the scope varies so much from site to site. I give you an estimate up front and let you know if I'm getting close to it, so there are no surprises.
A full rebuild through my Signature Web Design package starts at $1,750 for up to five pages. E-commerce sites include up to 10 product listings, with additional listings quoted as needed.
Every project is custom-quoted based on what your business actually needs. For a deeper look at pricing, see [link to "How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost?"].
Is a refresh always cheaper than a rebuild?
Not always, and I'd rather be upfront about that.
A small, focused refresh is often the most affordable way to improve your site. But if a site needs changes on nearly every page, or the theme fights every update, the hours can add up to more than a rebuild would cost, and you'd still end up with an older foundation.
That's why I look at your current site before recommending either option. Sometimes the honest answer is "let's fix these three things," and sometimes it's "you'll get more for your money by starting fresh."
How long does a refresh or rebuild take?
A refresh depends entirely on the scope. Some are a few focused updates, and others are bigger projects spread over a few weeks.
A new website typically takes four to six weeks, and a combined branding and website project typically takes six to eight weeks.
Timelines also depend on how quickly content and feedback come in. I keep you updated throughout, and if anything shifts, I'll let you know.
What questions should you ask before deciding?
Before reaching out to a designer, think through:
- What frustrates you most about your current website?
- What do customers ask you that your site should already answer?
- Are you happy with your platform, or has your business outgrown it?
- Does your current site still match your brand?
- Are you adding new products, services, or directions soon?
- How much of your site would you keep if you could start over?
Your answers usually point pretty clearly in one direction.
What happens after your website is updated?
Whether you refresh or rebuild, your website will need updates over time. I include a one-hour training before launch on new websites so you're comfortable making your own edits.
If you'd rather hand updates off, my maintenance plan offers one-time or quarterly hours at a discounted rate, so your site keeps growing with your business.
Not sure which one you need?
That's exactly what my free 30-minute consult is for. We'll look at what's working, what isn't, and where your business is headed, and I'll give you my honest recommendation.
